A round-up of my favourite 2018 home trends

As this year comes to a close, I want to take an opportunity to point out some of my favourite home decor trends over the last 12 months. It was no easy feat to narrow this list down, I was sooo inspired by so many things this past year. Here are some of my favs, let me know if you agree!

1. Fringe

Fringe speaks to that bit of "Boho" that's in us all. For me, when I think of fringe, I picture DIY wall hangings. They were ALL the range this year, popping up in every Winners, Marshalls, Home Sense and craft fair. What I especially love about this style of decor is it can easily be turned into a DIY project. One of my goals for 2019 is to try making some of my own crochet plant holders and wall hangings.

2. Velvet

Don't get my wrong, velvet furniture has been a trend we've come back to over and over again throughout the decades. What made 2018 velvets unique was the colours they were coming in. Millennial Pink and Emerald Green were my two favouite colours I saw this season. Having a colourful velvet loveseat is a great way to make a statement in a room--and bonus, the fabric makes for a comfy hangout.

3. Open shelves and closets

I LOVE this trend. However, if you're any bit a hoarder like I am this concept could go disastrously wrong. This trend definitely speaks to the minimalist population! Good news, if you're looking for a push to purge in the new year, this trend could definitely motivate you to do so.

4. Shop Vintage

I've said it before, but one of my all-time interior designers, Emily Henderson, passed on the wise wisdom of including one antique piece in every room of the house. As I slowly build up my antique collection, I've noticed more and more compliments from friends on my vintage finds and how I've incorporated them into the more modern furniture and decor of my home.

Bonus: antiques NEVER go out of style.

5. Gallery Wall

If I had to choose a favourite trend for 2018, this would be it! There is so much potential to be as creative as possible with this. What's so neat about this trend, is no two gallery walls are alike. Some of my favourite ideas to incorporate onto a gallery wall are hats, plates, tiles and mirrors. I bought a kitchen 12" x 12" kitchen tile for $3, and it looks awesome with my wall of other paintings and photos!

6. Pastels

Pastels were huge this past year, and I don't anticipate this trend loosing popularity any time soon. I love the creamy whites mixed with the soft pinks, oranges and greens. There's something about pastels that give off instant "cozy" vibes.

7. Statement rugs

Rugs can make all the difference in a room. It can set the tone of a room, and make it go from drab or boring to sophisticated or elegant. I love this blurb from Better Home and Garden:

"You've heard of statement jewelry? Maybe you even wear a chunky bauble to dress up your T-shirts and cardigan sets. A statement rug performs the same accessorizing task in a room: It elevates the basic to something special."-BHG

My tip: don't commit right away. Bring home a rug or two you're interested in and give yourself a few days to decide what it adds your space. You want your rug to add to compliment your space, not steal the show.

8. Brass Fixtures

Although i'm far from being able to design the dream Kitchen I've always wanted, it's never too early to start collecting ideas. One trend that i've noticed over and over again lately is the use of brass fixtures in the Kitchen. I'm SO on board with this look. It definitely adds an element of class and subtle extravagance to a room. I mean just look at this kitchen! How could you not want it all.

9. Geometric Furniture

At first, when I was seeing all these geometric style pieces come onto the decor scene I wasn't thrilled by them. As I've discovered different designs, brands and styling suggestions I've kind of grown to love this trend. Here's a DIY geometric side table that I can't wait to get started on! (find out how to make your own by clicking on the pic!)

10. Plant Love

Okay, although not anything new, I just wanted to share some plant inspo for you all. Another one of my New Years resolutions for 2019 is to incoorporate more plants in my apartment (and get better at watering them regularly). There are so many amazing benefits to bringing plants into your home, including overall happiness boost! That's right, all that CO2 will do you loads of good, especially during these dark and dreary winter days.
